The metal surfaces have to be free of fat, cinder and rust to enable an ideal adhesion of the spring coating. For a technical clearliness the springs are pickled with alkaline solutions and acids.
Technical springs were pickled with acids to remove rust and cinder. Combined with defating of the material, a totally clean surface of the metal parts can be achieved.
Tempering is a heat treatment of springs to drive hydrogen out of the surface and to avoid fractures. As an after-treatment method it is mainly used to galvanize.
